My grandma actually makes the best Lavangi I’ve pretty much ever tasted. Her secret? Like, a pinch of dried plum paste. Makes this sort of sweet-and-sour thing that is completely perfect. You could be finding Lavangi in most local restaurants, but seriously ask around to see if someone’s grandma will hook you up, really it’s worth it!

2. Girda: The Comfort Food Champion

Okay, think proper warm hug, only edible. Is that right? That’s Girda. Too its a kind of bread, is that sort of like naan, that’s baked in a tandoor oven. This taste? That’s a little smoky, almost crispy on the outside, and soft, really very soft on the inside. A bit like that comfy feeling when you just snuggle into a blanket on a windy evening.

When I really had a terrible day, my mom could always make it better with Girda and local honey. That smell of baking bread from the tandoor can very cheer you up right away, is that the honest truth! Head down to the local bakery early in the morning and basically watch them in action. You get it piping hot!

Girda’s amazing on its own, yet really great to tear apart and scoop up some local yogurt or cheese with. A local market will pretty much stock a great selections. Try some different cheeses, almost, they are the perfect combination!

3. Lankaran Tea: More Than Just a Drink

Tea isn’t really just a drink; really it’s part of life in Lankaran. Might be it’s served in almost little, very curved glasses and too its really strong. Tea is also proper dark and basically you know, you take small sips from it. That’s the point.

When I visited Lankaran, this kind old guy at a chaikhana (teahouse) showed me basically the way you drink it properly – holding this small saucer at chest height to cool it slightly. A bit like, the sound of clinking glasses, so that’s everyone signalling that things, will be slowing down just a little and its time, actually its tea time!

Enjoy basically your tea alongside local sweets like pakhlava (like baklava) or gogal (sort of like a flaky pastry). Lots of cafes offer basically tasting menus. This also makes this sort of really good activity, especially if this weather is very awful!

4. Fish with Narsharab: A Zesty Delight

Being close, really very close to the sea, means fresh fish is easy to come by in Lankaran. Its typically grilled or fried. But its secret is that they will drizzle Narsharab on top.

My grandpa was really a fisherman and could be cook fish just by, like, on the beach over a simple fire. His favorite was that he drizzle Narsharab right on top and he’d basically claim that the tartness made it just better. The man could live with a fresh plate every night! Go visit a seafood restaurant to actually get, a bit, a really fantastic feel of this treat.

Pairs is like with fresh greens and, like grilled veggies for a delicious meal. You can even maybe take, a local market tour to go select this absolute freshest catch! After all there will be chefs and locals right there.

5. Local Wine: A Taste of the Terroir

Basically when some talk about wine countries, Azerbaijan very isn’t always, you know, that the first place coming into peoples’ head, but actually it should, could be a little, maybe in a few parts of the country and particularly in the region of Lankaran. Could be we find a little surprise with really amazing locally grown vineyards that actually you could go to and actually have wine tasting.

We actually once spent an autumn really taking a road trip going across the hills. We stopped in almost a bunch, you know, sort of like boutique wineries, talked really shop with a few really super passionate wine makers and found a local history basically, just for ourselves! You have the option, basically if its an option to very enjoy it from someone you, like know locally so please, it could enhance just that overall experience just that little.

There are a few like tours or events usually at the wineries or maybe if your there might be hotels with tasting rooms for something that could fit you as that nice bit of this culture too. Don’t almost feel pressured to pick something and just really ask questions to actually get better oriented around something is a local to this region.
