Top 5 Malta Historical Tours: Reviews & Recommendations

Malta, that little island sitting pretty right smack in the middle of the Mediterranean, it’s just teeming with a past that’s, like, seriously epic. You know, for those folks just looking to scratch beneath the surface of its sun-kissed beaches and, like, pretty blue waters, there is a treasure trove of stories. They go way, way back; stories etched in stone, you know? And the really good news? There is this collection of historical tours that do a wonderful job of bringing Malta’s crazy past to life. I am going to, like, break down the five that I enjoyed the most and give you, maybe, a couple of suggestions on how to get the best bang for your buck, so to speak. Very cool.

1. Valletta Walking Tour: A Capital Experience

Okay, so Valletta, right? That place isn’t just the capital; it’s seriously like a living, breathing museum. When you think about going on a stroll, the walking tour lets you wander around its really amazing streets. The stroll is led by tour guides that seriously know their stuff; it’s almost as though they have a Ph.D. in Maltese history. They point out the places that, well, most tourists will miss. St. John’s Co-Cathedral, is, actually, an absolute stunner and just overflowing with history. The Grand Master’s Palace gives you this cool peek into what Malta looked like when it was led by the Knights. Plus, you could just check out the upper Barrakkara Gardens. What it does is provide this almost stunning view of the Grand Harbor. Now, some tours might provide a history lesson or a snippet, but these tours, are all history, history, history. Really makes you want to learn more, right?

2. Mdina and Rabat Tour: Stepping Back in Time

Mdina is this old capital city. It’s seriously magical. Mdina and Rabat, they’re like two peas in a pod. You know, they both show you what Malta looked like centuries ago, or, possibly, more. This tour that takes you ’round the “Silent City” Mdina with these winding streets is really the definition of peaceful, you know? St. Paul’s Cathedral is an example; it’s awesome and really worth a snapshot or two. What’s great about this tour is, actually, a walk that occurs outside the city gates into Rabat. So many other cool archaeological places to explore there, too. You know, the guides give you these unbelievable backstories that can really put the location in context, kind of thing. You know, what used to take place back in those times.

3. Megalithic Temples Tour: Unearthing Ancient Mysteries

Alright, you’re talking old. I mean seriously ancient when it concerns the Megalithic Temples. Actually, these temples, places like Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, might pre-date Stonehenge. I find that to be really, really, amazing. Taking the tour through there gives you this really interesting peek at these constructions that are thousands and thousands of years old. As a matter of fact, they are really interesting because so much about them is, seriously, shrouded in mystery. You just scratch your head wondering. These tours give you explanations for, like, their purposes. It might be religious or astronomical. And then it gets really trippy and your brain wants to learn even more. It really helps you think about humans, where you stand now, where humans were back then and how important Malta was to these Neolithic people.

4. Three Cities Tour: Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua

So, right across from Valletta, there’s these things, these “Three Cities”— Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. Now they have these backstories of Malta. When you actually take the tour there, they show you how awesome it is and how great it defended the island, centuries prior. These aren’t as ‘pretty’ as Valletta, really. They are far more, oh, just ‘salt of the earth’, is how I describe it. You may even, now get this, take a boat to some place. So the harbor cruise lets you see things in a completely different kind of light. It allows one to have all these interesting different ways to learn concerning Malta. Did you know that some people refer to this as ‘the real Malta?’ These cities really illustrate what Malta is, the true identity, in some cases. It will give you the warm fuzzies.

5. Gozo Historical Tour: Island Hopping Adventure

Okay, so, just a little ferry trip from Malta is, actually, Gozo. You know, Gozo’s like Malta’s quieter kid brother or sister, something like that, but, it still packs some crazy historical punches. One might tour Victoria, that is its capital. The Citadel gives one this almost bird’s-eye view of the island, the landscapes around it and stuff like that. Then, right near it, the Ggantija temples; these stand almost impressively as one of the globe’s ancient man-made spots. Now, these places on this trip they let one have so many unique opportunities. They take you to unique places to hike or they could just check out the landscape. Many think Gozo gives them some super neat way to see what Malta used to appear as because Gozo has a, well, a much more down-to-Earth-pace.
