Top 5 Papeete Outdoor Activities: Explore Tahiti

Top 5 Papeete Outdoor Activities: Explore Tahiti

Papeete Tahiti

Papeete, that bright center on the main island of Tahiti, really is much more than just a jumping-off point to other tropical isles. I mean, it has a spirit, almost a thrumming pulse, totally of its own. Okay, so you might be landing here anyway, what with the airport being here, yet before you take off for quieter shores, perhaps think about soaking in what Papeete actually has to offer. Truly, beyond that port and the shops, is that there are adventures to be found, particularly if you get into the open air. So, whether you’re keen to hike, to get wet, or even to simply take in fantastic vistas, Papeete just might pleasantly surprise you. Just a heads-up, these are the five open-air escapades that I definitely recommend.

1. Hiking to Fautaua Waterfall

Fautaua Waterfall Hike

That hike to Fautaua Waterfall, which is actually almost a Tahiti experience that everyone remembers! I mean, picture this: a powerful cascade tumbling hundreds of feet down a steep rock face. So, to get there, it does need some effort, yes, it involves trekking through lush vegetation that can feel just a little bit humid – I’m saying that you should bring water. Usually, the trailhead, that’s found not that far from downtown Papeete, quickly throws you into, like, another, way more silent universe. The path sort of winds upwards, and with that are views of the valley that get better and better with each step you take. Then you’re walking towards the sound of the falling water. Okay, at the base of the fall, that cool spray feels unbelievably refreshing after that climb. I’d point out that it is not, maybe, a wander for the faint of heart, very possibly because of how steep parts can get and it also requires a permit (you need to secure this beforehand!). The reward, still, is in those spectacular views and a real sense of achievement. The word from those in the know is that it is usually the most dramatic when visited after a rainfall (yet obviously proceed with caution if the trails seem slippery).

Located inland a little bit from Papeete, it’s easy to get lost there, for real, as you move around these wonderfully kept gardens, home to this huge group of plants from all around the tropical corners on earth. That founder, Harrison W. Smith, you see, he had this deep interest in botany. Basically, what that meant in real terms is that he built this peaceful place for display and study. You’ll get to wander amongst huge trees, fragrant flower displays, and very possibly some plants you’ve just plain never set eyes on before. The garden is ideal for somebody looking for a slower-paced kind of morning or afternoon, really, and it’s just a brilliant location to enjoy that nature and peace that Tahiti has in buckets. And you know, with less hard effort than something like a major hike calls for. It feels like a real getaway.
