Top 5 Plymouth Food & Drink Spots: A Local’s Tasty Tour

Plymouth, you know, it’s almost a city bursting with maritime history and, actually, surprisingly great places for grabbing some food and a nice drink. Like, finding those truly special spots, though, can be rather tricky, as a matter of fact if you’re not really sure where you should look. So, after, you know, quite a bit of tasting my way around, basically I’ve put together my personal top five picks for food and drink places, and stuff, right here in Plymouth. So, whether you’re actually visiting for the first time, or, arguably you’ve lived here for years and you’re after something just a little bit different, this, you know, is something to point you to exactly the right spots.

#1 The Greedy Goose: Fine Dining with a View

The Greedy Goose, right, it’s sort of hidden away in what I think is a beautiful historic building, actually really close to the Barbican. Actually, the setting is great and the food, you know, is arguably the real reason to visit. Like, they put emphasis on really modern British cuisine and focus it using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients too it’s almost a given these days. Like, that means the menu actually changes quite regularly, and that always seems exciting, anyway. So, on my visit, like, I actually tried their pan-fried scallops, and I’ll tell you what, those scallops they were absolutely heavenly, very lightly seared with black pudding crumbs to deliver very contrasting textures. Their wine list actually matches the food menu very well, like offering a good variety of choices so it is something to keep everyone, who likes a bit of wine with food, rather happy. Anyway, the service could be slightly formal, but also very friendly and so I thought it worked very well and made for just a special experience, that’s nice isn’t it? If you want that bit more of a special date then this is probably it.

#2 Rockfish: Seafood Heaven on the Sutton Harbour

Rockfish, okay, this spot it sits right on Sutton Harbour, yet is basically the ideal place if, you know, you’re really after a completely informal, relaxed meal of utterly amazing seafood. So, it’s part of, very, a small chain that’s really all about sustainable seafood and a proper family friendly vibe, you know. What I really enjoyed actually, was their simple grilled hake, and it was so fresh you would think, arguably it just come right out of the ocean, really, right onto the plate. Actually, the batter on their fish and chips is always lovely and crispy, you know it’s really difficult to master the perfect batter so getting a great crispy one is such a relief, I thought. They, that being Rockfish, too, have an excellent selection of local beers on offer, as I was saying and I always like local ales when I eat out, as a matter of fact. Yet, just so you know, it, this place, could get quite busy, especially when, like, the sun’s out, but I reckon the views, you know, and the amazing seafood are almost always worth it.

#3 The Artillery Tower: History and Culinary Excellence

The Artillery Tower, like, if you fancy something with, as a matter of fact quite a lot of history then, as a matter of fact you really ought to check out this unique restaurant which is inside what seems like a 15th-century tower, you know, right on the waterfront so to speak. Basically, it’s, very, actually more of an intimate kind of setting that really offers a tasting menu that really showcases the chef’s skills I suppose. So, the food is very creative, and the emphasis is on really using the best locally available produce of which there’s rather a lot. Anyway, each course could be, let’s say really like a piece of art and it seemed really really carefully thought out, especially as a matter of fact concerning the flavour combinations and presentation in some respects, I think. Like, the wine pairings tend to be really spot-on as I understand it, therefore enhancing the, basically whole dining experience if you are that way inclined to having paired wine, that is. Anyway, that said, because of the size, so to speak, actually booking well in advance seems pretty much necessary, I think, particularly if you are celebrating.

#4 The Dolphin Inn: A Proper Plymouth Pub Experience

The Dolphin Inn, actually, like, if what you fancy is, let’s say, a true pub experience then you can’t, anyway really go wrong when you give a visit to The Dolphin Inn, right in the heart of the old Barbican. Anyway, arguably it’s, very, one of the oldest pubs in Plymouth, steeped in local history and just full of a proper character. Like, inside, is that, arguably, you’ll usually find a buzz, apparently always filled with both locals and, really, some happy tourists as well, so you are definitely likely to get chatting if that’s what you are into. What I especially liked about this venue actually, was their real ales, especially very well kept, yet the atmosphere alone is arguably really the star of the show so to speak, in many ways. Anyway, that is that, the Dolphin Inn doesn’t really claim to be really a gastropub, yet the food is, so, always wholesome, pretty hearty and pretty reasonable, so you know, you can just fill your face at low cost and feel full, right? Anyway, I would actually recommend, so, their classic pub meals, especially like their Sunday roast, or arguably if that’s not for you then perhaps a, actually really tasty, pasty.

#5 Salumi Bar & Eatery: Authentic Italian Flavors

Salumi Bar & Eatery, this is the last spot on the list, anyway, a touch of Italy is on offer in Plymouth, right in this charming bar and eatery actually in the city centre. Anyway, you know, they really do tend to specialize in serving amazing cured meats, cheese boards, too, with very good, arguably authentic, Italian sandwiches and panini for lunch. I thought that’s so cute when they do lunch because you have that in mind to have for the day, in some respects. Basically, the sharing boards seemed a really great way, it is arguable that, anyway, it’s probably a very very good idea for friends actually or groups if you fancy just really trying out loads of what they’ve really got to actually offer so to speak. Like, their Aperol Spritz is usually very well-made if, you know, that’s your thing (it’s a very Italian kind of tipple, and stuff), and their coffee seemed rich and really authentic to what you would expect to find anyway if you went out to have a quick drink and something, in that style, out in Rome or Milan perhaps, I’d wager, yet, of course, right here in Plymouth, you know. Anyway, if I went there and wanted lunch, which is a rare occasion for me to go to this place anyway, the place where it seems to usually stand out would likely be the great attention to detail to be honest and the friendly atmosphere for a really good afternoon so to speak and more or less. But this doesn’t always work like this as I was saying earlier too, this place has bad days but not as often I have ever been or seen with my eyes anyway!
