Fondue: The Ultimate Swiss Comfort Food

Ah, fondue! That bubbling pot of melted cheese is more than just dinner, arguably. It’s like a social ritual, maybe even a party starter, very cozy and so forth. Usually, fondue involves a mixture of cheeses (Gruyère and Emmental are the classic go-tos, right?), a splash of white wine, a dash of garlic, and sometimes a hint of Kirsch (cherry brandy, by the way) just to spice it up. You dip chunks of bread into this dreamy blend, and pretty much you keep dipping until every last drop is gone. Some spots add potatoes or other dippables like gherkins. Seriously.

You know, I had this fantastic fondue experience up in a little chalet near Zermatt. After a long day of trekking, that warm, gooey cheese was pretty much exactly what I needed, totally, and as a matter of fact. Raclette: Melted Cheese Heaven

Alright, Raclette’s another cheese dish that’s kind of a must, more or less if you’re in the Swiss Alps, you know. It’s both an experience and a meal, definitely. The classic way to have Raclette is to heat up a giant wheel of cheese and then scrape off the melted part onto your plate. Often, this melted cheese is enjoyed with potatoes, gherkins, and pickled onions and stuff. It’s salty, it’s creamy, and you know it’s totally comforting, as I was saying.

That, very delicious melted cheese smell, it often fills the air at Christmas markets and ski lodges, to be honest. You might see them using modern electric Raclette grills nowadays, but to be fair the traditional method of melting the cheese by an open fire is hard to beat. A funny memory, I sort of tried to recreate Raclette at home once using a regular grill, just a bit. Needless to say, it wasn’t pretty similar. But, the thing is, the experience of enjoying Raclette with others, telling stories, while you share great food. That is really priceless, that is, seriously. Swiss Chocolate: A Sweet Symphony

OK, let’s get one thing straight, Swiss chocolate isn’t really just chocolate; it’s kind of a masterpiece, I mean. What’s the deal with the Swiss doing it so right anyway? Well, for starters, they only very tend to use high-quality ingredients like your fantastic cocoa beans and really fresh Alpine milk, right? This is obviously responsible for that irresistibly creamy smooth melt-in-your-mouth texture, as a matter of fact.

Any way, what chocolate variety are we talking about? The richness of a dark Lindt bar, right? The playful charm of Toblerone with the delicious honey-almond nougat bits? Actually I went on this chocolate tour near Gruyères that blew my mind. We watched chocolatiers craft all these pralines and truffles as it’s almost an art form. And I would suggest to pick some handmade chocolates from a small chocolatier for an extra treat for you. The flavor bursts they put into their items? Very creative in a way. Rösti: The Humble Potato’s Transformation

Rösti, is this really a food to talk about, so to speak? Well, actually I am talking about it now, it’s that’s very typical, right? This is very popular indeed. These super basic potato cakes are arguably more versatile than you might think. They’re just prepared grated potatoes pan-fried until crisp and pretty golden. Some might put extra salt and pepper too, it may require something just a bit more. That crisp outer crust and fluffy interior, very gorgeous too. They might serve this as a side dish but some serve it topped with things like fried eggs, cheese or vegetables, very unique.

Oh and don’t go thinking all the rostis are actually similar. Every region of Switzerland sometimes, tends to prepare them in a different fashion, as a matter of fact. That is actually kind of cute though. They use a range of ingredients so each is actually pretty special, sort of unique in it’s own way. Once, I ate rösti at this mountainside cafe which was delicious and hearty, almost rustic actually. These people know a lot more about food than I do, you. It actually got me curious and the potato had been boiled previously with the skin on. It had been left to cool. Then later it’s grated with care and combined only before it got pan-fried. Appenzeller Bier: A Taste of Swiss Tradition

Of course it’s not only about eating when you travel to this region, there are loads of drinks to check out too, arguably. Appenzeller Bier isn’t arguably your huge international beer brand though, right? This sort of charming brewery tends to stick to what the local traditions are, basically. Appenzeller is found up near the hilly Appenzell region with green pastures, naturally.

They got that great spring water and I read on the tin, there are special herb mixes that nobody gets to know about either, naturally. When you actually find somewhere nice, you’ll just taste it yourself, seriously. Also I chatted with this one lady, after visiting a chalet and it actually turns out there’s one herb blend that is mixed right into one of the types of beers you know.
