Tozeur, a captivating city resting on the edge of the Sahara Desert in Tunisia, acts a bit like a starting point for some genuinely stunning day trips. That is to say, it’s more than simply a desert gateway; it’s a spot where you find a combination of history, movie magic, and unbelievable landscapes. Planning a trip here? Well, anyway, I’m going to tell you what I found were some absolutely unmissable escapes from Tozeur. Get ready, I think, to discover ancient oases, step onto the sets of famous movies, and, possibly, feel the amazing peace of the Sahara. I mean, that’s what happened to me!

1. Chott el-Jerid: The Surreal Salt Lake

Chott el-Jerid, you see, is this big, unbelievable salt lake, more or less. Honestly, the landscape, that stretches out from Tozeur, becomes completely otherworldly, seemingly. During the hot part of the day, well, the shimmering mirages kind of trick your mind, and what you see looks just like water that disappears into the distance, which is really very cool. Sunrise and sunset? A bit like that, they bathe the salt flats in these amazing colors. You probably should plan your visit around those times to catch it! The lake is actually the biggest salt pan in the Sahara, and so it’s not really much of a surprise that it presents some genuinely incredible photo opportunities. This excursion can easily be combined with a trip to some of the mountain oases.

If you are really very interested in the geology, or maybe photography, that is, of extreme landscapes, this might be your spot! Basically, the vastness of the lake and its mirages offer this very unique experience. It kind of makes you feel a bit small when you stand next to all that space, you know? Bring sunscreen, you might like your hat, and that is because the sun here is pretty unforgiving. 2. Chebika, Tamerza, and Mides: Mountain Oases

Chebika, Tamerza, and Mides… so, in some respects they feel like jewels hiding among the mountains close to Tozeur, basically. Chebika, with its stunning views of the desert, gives you the kind of “Wow!” effect. You’ll walk up a path to get to the spot, but trust me when I say that it will give you absolutely incredible views from the top. Mides offers canyons where the cliffs appear extremely dramatic – because they really are. Lastly, that is to say, Tamerza, the biggest of these oases, has this waterfall, more or less, and deserted towns full of history. They are somewhat evocative.

Anyway, these mountain oases provide more or less of a fantastic contrast to the flat desert landscapes. Each oasis is a little unlike the others and gives you slightly different insights into the area’s past, and then into how natural water sources make life possible even in these hard environments, you know? Plan about a day to fully see these locations because it’s probably the best way to take it all in at a relaxed pace, actually. This also gives you plenty of time to enjoy everything that each of them offers you.

3. Ong Jemel: Where Star Wars Comes to Life

Ong Jemel might be famous, almost entirely for being where the Star Wars movie sets were made. That is, imagine that: Standing on planet Tatooine! Yes, that is really Ong Jemel! Walk about the set of Mos Espa; kind of a striking desert landscape as a result, and take a peek into the recognizable pod racing arena. Fans? Totally, they’ll find it really very neat to actually stand where some memorable scenes were filmed. If you are really a fan of Star Wars, it goes without saying that you will get very excited here.

You can visit this location with an organized tour, but that isn’t all. As a matter of fact, it is almost that, where tour guides typically share behind-the-scenes info and historical information, maybe. And by the way, Ong Jemel has amazing views, specifically at sunset. The desert at that time really makes the location seem absolutely incredible, it gives it this whole magical air, actually.

4. Tozeur Medina: A Step Back in Time

So, the Tozeur Medina, which also can be called Ouled Hadef, invites you to go stroll about this old section. It feels a lot as if you’ve actually gone back into a much simpler time. It might be famous because it uses brick architecture in these stunning designs, a little like geometric patterns showing up on the walls. Wander around its thin passageways to check out craft shops. The Medina acts a little like this lovely, quiet place to experience the traditions and architecture of Tozeur, and I really loved that!

Keep an eye open for traditional building designs that highlight local art, really. Spending time there, to be honest, it is almost a bit like wandering around an outdoor art gallery. Go later in the afternoon; just about when things start to cool off some, or very early so that you can stay away from those crowds that swell during the busy times. I am going to give you a hint! Negotiating prices there might lead you to get some wonderful deals on souvenirs or those crafts by local artisans, you see.

5. Douz: The Gateway to the Sahara

Douz, known like the “Gateway to the Sahara,” sits at almost the edge of those large, mesmerizing desert stretches. That is to say, getting there might need an entire day, that you actually plan and want for that, but wow, will it give back! Think about the camel trekking, perhaps trying dune bashing.
