Are you thinking about planning an escape that’s totally breathtaking and something you won’t forget? Then, anyway, Trigrad could be where you want to be headed. Here, we are checking out the top 5 outdoor escapades that are bound to get your heart pumping and make memories to remember.
1. Devil’s Throat Cave: A Descent into Mystery
Devil’s Throat Cave, sometimes referred to as Dyavolsko Garlo, it’s almost an experience. Legend says, anyway, that this spot was one of the entries to the underworld way back when Orpheus was trying to save Eurydice. Actually, today it’s way more of a chance to see something amazing nature made. Now, very, very close to the border with Greece, not so very far south, so it might even be that your phone greets you with a “welcome to Greece” text when you’re really not even in Greece! So, the big deal with this cave? It’s got this enormous underground waterfall.
You get to go down, down, down into the cave on steps that are dug into the rock, and the roar of the water kind of fills everything. At some point the sounds get louder. So much louder. The scale is unreal, and, in fact, it is Bulgaria’s tallest underground waterfall. As I was saying, the mist in the air is very, very cold. Also, at some point, the spray bounces all around in the vast space as all that water makes the final leap into a pool below. And the whole idea is that everything goes down the waterfall, but then no-one really knows what happens next, alright?
Basically, people have tossed things in, like logs and stuff. No one sees them ever come out the other side. And even dye hasn’t emerged in connecting rivers and streams either. So there’s a real kind of mystery surrounding where everything goes. Actually, the cool thing? It’s more than just pretty—it’s pretty educational too. When you make it down there, basically, people talk a bit about how the cave was formed and the wildlife there.
And it’s all pretty secure, so you won’t hurt the nature there. Even cooler? A lot of people talk about taking pictures, and really, it’s very, very dark! So maybe crank up the ISO and bring some kit that likes working in the dark or maybe give up. Basically, inside the cave? Wear stuff that you would also be happy to have under a cold shower, alright? When you’re seeing the Devil’s Throat Cave, so keep in mind, it can get pretty crowded in summer. Anyway, going early or after peak times could get you less of a crowd.

2. Hiking to Trigrad Gorge: Nature’s Masterpiece
You can just kind of meander along the Trigrad River through the massive Trigrad Gorge if hiking’s your thing. We kind of like that stuff. This gorge, I think, sometimes it’s cut very, very deep into the mountainside. In a way, you feel super, super tiny staring up at those gigantic walls above you.
A walk down here is often more than just hiking. It’s also seeing. You kind of have opportunities to see wild nature. So, you might see some cool plants, maybe even meet some animals if you go slow. It’s almost as if this gorge shows a little glimpse of life in the Rhodope Mountains.
Is there stuff to keep in mind if this seems interesting? Comfortable shoes, that’s important, seeing as the trails, even though people keep them nice, basically, it’s all wild ground, so no flip-flops! Too, it’s almost useful to get the camera because what you see? You will maybe want to show people!

If you need more action, well, in some respects, canyoning close to Trigrad is like, where things kick up a gear. So, you jump, you swim, and basically, get your way down canyons! Some companies give you stuff. Very safe stuff! Think helmets, so at least that bit is probably not going to get hurt if you bump it, or the chance that you get a rock dropped on it. And, for instance, ropes so the companies are also not trying to kill you by making you jump stuff that can’t be jumped. Guides usually show you a lot too. This way you should learn to go through fast water safely and how to get past rocks or small falls. Now, basically, canyoning makes seeing the Rhodope Mountains, like, so much more hardcore! Don’t forget you do kind of need to be OK with being very, very wet.
If this kind of clicks something for you? Always use people who do this right, alright? Check that, basically, they are registered with someone important and got really good words from customers. Too, in a way, look at whether their equipment is spanking brand new because you do not want that breaking on you halfway down, that’s my personal view anyway!
