1. Hiking Volcán Tungurahua: Getting up Close and Slightly Personal
I mean, so, let’s get started with the main attraction: Volcán Tungurahua. Anyway, this very active volcano really sets the tone for the whole province. The hike could be a bit tricky, is that right, but oh, so fulfilling. You could probably choose from several trails, some for beginners and others that should, arguably, test even those very experienced hikers.
Basically, I opted for a mid-level trail that started in the little community of Baños. As I hiked, well, the landscape just kept transforming. I saw green, misty forests, giving way to, like your, rugged, volcanic terrain. It was hard, yet there was a powerful sensation of connection as I walked closer and closer to this rumbling natural thing. Getting to the top gave this awesome view, almost surreal. Seeing the crater – something massive – and these, like, these faraway views of the Andes was worth it. But, you know, just heads-up, make certain that you check current activity levels with local guides prior to hitting the paths because, you know, Volcán Tungurahua lives up to its ‘Throat of Fire’ name! The Pastaza River is a very common location, and I thought, basically, that there was an operation running on top form by professionals.
I tried ziplining – that feeling of whooshing across this vast valley, alright, it was unmatched. In that case, you will fly, with, maybe, eight lines, across like, six cables or something – that gives amazing sights of waterfalls and plant life, basically like this view. Anyway, what I did too, which, really, had this feel of just natural peace, you get that a bit, and it was a natural thermal spring. That is like, naturally warmed by the volcano, so these pools are, actually, perfect for kicking back after that, extremely hectic moment. That town also does some good food! I took a rafting excursion on the Pastaza, and it really was both intense and stunning. The rapids, you see, can be, quite fast, and it did take a good quantity of coordination to take to the waters as one crew and it gave that exciting sensation of speeding through that wilderness. And it did have quiet spans, to be honest, when one has just the space for taking in, almost, that, oh, so thick plant life along those shores and then view these local creatures. That’s nice to know, because at any moment there may well be like your anaconda-thing going on and you see that, don’t you. What’s the problem if someone has like, been taking stuff with them?
