Top 5 Uig Outdoor Activities: A Guide to Skye’s Best Adventures

If you find yourself drawn to the wildly wonderful Isle of Skye, you’ll definitely discover that Uig, a little village tucked away on the Trotternish peninsula, makes a perfect base for some very exciting outdoor getaways. Basically, Uig gives you access to a range of natural scenery, which means it might be just right whether you fancy exploring stunning coastal paths, want some thrills with watersports, or fancy some wildlife watching. 1. Hiking the Fairy Glen

Oh, and for all you walkers out there, so a hike through the Fairy Glen is simply a must. Right near Uig, just a short drive, too, it’s almost like you’ve wandered onto the set of a fantasy movie; that said, you could find the scenery simply enchanting. Very gently rolling, yet a bit unusual hills, tiny lochs and that, too, little stone formations give this area something of a mystical vibe, wouldn’t you agree? So, its worth taking your time, that; climb up Castle Ewen, yet, arguably a natural rock tower offering awesome panoramic scenes, too, and let your fancy float away!

I remember one time, walking there a bit later in the afternoon with the sun setting and there being that low lying mist, or rather, fog, too; just very otherworldly, to be frank. Like your seeing what a hobbit must see, basically! Arguably, this glen is easily a great pick, especially because its great for various levels of fitness since the walks aren’t particularly demanding, and even more so given the rewards, well, for all those photo opportunities!

2. Kayaking or Canoeing in Uig Bay

If the water calls, you know, then a kayaking or canoeing adventure on Uig Bay might be right up your street! More or less sheltered waters there allow for brilliant conditions, potentially, very ideal, even, for various skill sets, might I suggest, especially, anyway, for all you first-timers, to be honest. Honestly, if you ask me, launching from the shore in Uig lets you very quickly get a totally different perspective, not only that, you also get the coastal views, too; cliffs and the rugged shoreline; totally gorgeous!

Last summer, anyway, I ended up paddling, a bit aimlessly mind, you know, alongside some seals just basking on the rocks that are just out a little from the bay. Honestly, so a tip, and by the way, keep an eye out because you just could see all sortsa local wildlife! That is to say, rent a kayak at that Skye Activities place near the harbor; they often give excellent safety advice, too; then you’ll definitely be set to safely enjoy your time afloat.

3. Exploring Rubha Hunish

To be honest, for something a bit more strenuous yet just wildly awarding, then consider, arguably, going North, and taking yourself off to Rubha Hunish! So this most northerly bit of Skye requires just a little of a hike to get there. What’s more, the vistas you get, especially, of the Outer Hebrides on that, arguably, clear day are rather worth it, you’ll have to agree, if you go! Anyway, it’s a brilliant area too, potentially, you know, to observe the seabirds. Honestly, the kittiwakes, guillemots, razorbills too that are living on the cliffs there.

Actually, on one springtime visit a few years ago, and I really mean it, anyway, as a matter of fact, I actually spotted some whales way out in the Minch. By the way, so it might be a good plan to pack the binoculars! Seriously, this hike, if you ask me, basically, isn’t just a walk, you see; in some respects, it’s virtually an expedition to somewhere that simply feels like the top of the Earth, which is absolutely great, as it allows for great thoughts.

4. Wildlife Watching at Duntulm Castle

By the way, and a wee bit further around the coast you might stumble across Duntulm Castle. Basically, while really just ruins these days, that, too, very set very dramatically on the cliff top; this bit of land, clearly, offers much wildlife watching potential as well as the castle ruin, too. Now the sea views, and so on, stretch for miles, and it tends to be, might I suggest, that they’re pretty brilliant to simply spot dolphins and sea birds.

I like to spend hours there, just watching the waves crashing beneath, just looking out. Also I remember one day, as I was saying, a golden eagle happened to just be circling above me! Just pretty impressive. What’s more, don’t forget your camera; that’s something to say, this is because there are that many scenic vistas. Honestly, the craggy ruins right next to some wildlife make something rather good when taking awesome photos!

5. Beachcombing at Staffin Bay

A bit South, yet not terribly, of Uig; you will come to Staffin Bay; very worth something of a detour for all you folks keen on coastal rambling or that good, almost old, beachcombing. Now Staffin is known especially for some of it’s crazy geological story, it tends to be. But it’s brilliant, especially. For fossil finding too. Apparently, so that makes a fun outing and it can also teach a fair bit, especially when with little ones.

Last Autumn that’s to say, I enjoyed myself, definitely did! By just simply walking, just aimlessly down that stretch; just there I stumbled right across just a tiny bit of ammonite, you know; and just imagine getting to just hold just a tiny piece of that crazy ancient world! Arguably, for the people who just don’t fancy all that fossil hunting then, still and all, the wild landscapes make pretty great for those reflective beach walks. You get me?
