So, if you’re planning a trip and hoping to pick up more than souvenirs, there are just great courses and workshops that can connect you right into the heart of this Greek town. I’ve explored what Kastoria has to offer, so I will just offer you a guide on the best classes to check out, guaranteeing that your visit would be that extra bit more special and interesting.

Traditional Fur Crafting Workshop

Fur Crafting Kastoria

Kastoria actually has this reputation that it’s been a big player in the fur business for ages, which means fur crafting here is more than that it’s just work, you know; it’s a legacy. These workshops actually give you the chance to find out about this long-held tradition right from people who’ve probably been working with fur their whole lives. You’re very likely to learn the methods of picking, cutting, and sewing fur, gaining so much respect for the talent that makes it.

I once met an artisan, old Mr. Nikos, whose family just has been in the fur game for, like, five generations. He would just tell these stories of how fur was super important to Kastoria’s economy and culture. In this workshop that I kind of weaseled my way into (totally worth it, by the way), I got to work with a piece of fur, trying to make even something simple. Honestly, I messed it up a little, or maybe a lot, but holding that needle and thread, trying to make something useful? Just gives you a totally different look at what those guys do.

If you want to feel closer to what Kastoria’s all about, checking out one of these fur crafting workshops is actually great. You not only see it, but you kind of do it, meeting individuals and learning how they kept their culture going for all this time.

Byzantine Iconography Class

Byzantine Iconography Kastoria

With so many old churches around, Kastoria really gives off this spiritual, old-times feel, that’s true. Iconography, that very traditional art of painting religious pictures, it is just super important in Byzantine culture. Taking a class lets you just get into this historical art, learning everything from how you prep the board to mix your egg tempera and actually use gold leaf. I, for one, found that just being around the very careful process can almost be like meditation. You will understand, too, how those pictures really meant something to the people back then, just sharing their faith and history.

There’s this great story I heard when I checked out a class focused on iconography, you know. Apparently, this local family just has kept this iconography tradition alive for centuries, painting icons for smaller churches around the area. The tutor, Mrs. Eleni, was a firecracker; she had this way of just bringing the past to life. With every layer of paint we dabbed on, she would tell stories, too it’s almost like she was connecting with something way older than herself.

I’ll tell you, though, the mixing of colors that you do? It’s something that takes a lot of practice. Even a total beginner, you can feel so much of how deep and complex iconography actually is. These classes make you look at art in a completely different way, like, how art can be part of people’s history and spiritual expression.

Traditional Greek Cooking Workshop

Greek Cooking Workshop Kastoria

So, what’s a trip to Greece if you don’t learn some Greek cooking, right? Greek cooking classes will let you feel the local food culture in Kastoria. I, for one, learned a whole bunch of recipes using so very fresh, local ingredients — from some yummy pies to hearty stews. Obviously you get to eat what you cook, which is just the best part. Just talking to the cooks, individuals so full of stories about family meals and special methods, gives you so much more than recipes. It helps you feel connected to Kastoria.

I will not lie: I signed up for a cooking workshop basically because I wanted to get into a few local secrets of a restaurant that was really fantastic. And very luckily I came to know about this lady called Sofia. She welcomed me into her home, a place so alive with the aromas of baking bread and spices that were so rich, which are kind of nostalgic, you know. Sofia let me in on her family’s secret recipe for “Giouvetsi,” a great lamb stew. It was really interesting — cutting the veggies, browning the meat, and putting everything together.

She showed me how the best dishes aren’t just recipes; they show love and care. And, I am telling you, tasting that Giouvetsi we prepared made the whole morning absolutely perfect. Actually, I didn’t just leave with some recipes jotted down; I left with memories that tasted really amazing.

Lake Orestiada Photography Tour

Lake Orestiada Photography

Kastoria has this super scenic spot, Lake Orestiada, right? The photo tour will take you around that spot to teach you how to catch the awesome landscape, you know. Very experienced guides will give you tips on settings to composition, that can help whether you’re just someone who likes snapping pictures with their phone or you have some cameras and want to know a lot more about them. Walking around Lake Orestiada at different times of day can show the water in all different lighting conditions and what looks can be created. It gives you a better appreciation for Kastoria’s beauty and just being able to freeze all the awesome images you can take.

I got a chance to see Lake Orestiada with a photography group led by a total camera geek, George, just so passionate that you’d think he painted the landscapes himself. George actually showed our group just the best, little-known places to snap that lake in the morning sun. I took the shot of a lifetime. Plus, George told us all about the wildlife and just how the lake influences all that are local there. Photography, as I’ve learned, it isn’t just pressing a button; it’s just taking in and protecting the stories around you.

Greek Language Class

Greek Language Class Kastoria

When you visit a foreign place, trying to chat in its language, well, that does make all the difference. This kind of class usually teaches you basic conversational Greek that really helps as you just get around town. It’s just that being able to say a few phrases, or even just greeting others in Greek, so will make so many people around you super receptive and friendly, too it’s almost like you just suddenly clicked into this deeper part of the culture.

When I visited Kastoria, I decided to try just learning a bit of Greek. And the teacher, Maria? Total gem! In such a very short course of three days, she’s kind of made it less frightening and taught me greetings to ask directions, also ordering food. Actually, my butchered Greek attempts led to very funny moments when I was out getting souvlaki or asking around the local shops, but these efforts very definitely helped to get smiles and very useful tips that the guidebook could never share. So, a few words, it can really boost what you get out of just traveling around!
