If you try to go, just picture those intricate patterns and vibrant colors that, often, are telling stories of folklore. Anyway, now a number of workshops exist to show anyone the ropes; they go over everything from setting up the loom, which isn’t easy I am told, to understanding the symbolic meaning found in different motifs.

Master Blacksmithing Techniques

Okay, so weaving may not be it for you, but what about something involving fire and hammers? Very interesting. Blacksmithing, you know, that ancient art of shaping metal with heat and force, could be, might be just another awesome way to experience Latvian craftsmanship. So, several workshops that I’ve seen offer participants the chance to actually learn the basics of blacksmithing. Participants work with experienced smiths to learn the basic stuff, how to heat, bend, and shape metal to create cool objects. These courses, I guess, vary in length, though, just from a few hours to multiple days. Still, they’re pretty appropriate for beginners. People don’t need to, like, know a darn thing to just start swinging the hammer.

One of the main workshops is found at the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia. They, you know, often conduct regular demonstrations and workshops focused on traditional ironworking, in particular. That way people can, for instance, see historic techniques brought to life; even, for some courses, they can create their own little forged item, very cool! Other independent smithies, or whatever they might be called, are around the country too; some are basically in rural areas. Many really focus on a more intimate learning experience. It seems this chance to work with metal might really appeal to people who are very interested in hands-on creation. Very fun, right?

Explore Latvian Cuisine through Cooking Classes

Okay, maybe what about the stuff I just covered doesn’t sound great, right? Arguably you’d prefer to experience a culture, through it’s food. Right? Cooking classes centered around Latvian cuisine can, I suspect, give you exactly that. Several places that are available often cater to various skill levels, too, from total newbies in the cooking place to very experienced home chefs. The idea? Students get shown, very carefully, the ins and outs of local specialties, like, for instance, the dark rye bread. Or, arguably my personal favorite, pelmeni, a sort of Latvian dumpling.

Latvian Cooking Class

I was shocked at how common it is for classes to happen directly on organic farms. Farmers will really walk guests through their fields and then let them use those ingredients to just put together a meal. Similarly some restaurants provide interactive culinary sessions. I feel like anyone with any sort of an interest in food can find joy in these classes, also the sessions frequently involve very historical context. The local guides chat quite openly about the cultural meaning found within different recipes; too it seems like most sessions really will have the whole students sit down together after the class. It might really, though, prove to be a very very yummy and deeply educational experience for food lovers.
