1. Kondoa Irangi Rock Paintings Exploration

Kondoa Irangi Rock Paintings

First stop, is the Kondoa Irangi Rock Paintings. Basically, this place isn’t just something to see; that’s what I feel at least. These paintings, very old I’ll add, are spread out across a bunch of shelters on a hillside, like little outdoor art galleries that time basically forgot, so to speak. And these shelters offer what some might see as a rare glimpse into the lives and times of folks going way, way back—I’m talking millennia. It shows you, maybe, the spiritual beliefs of past peoples and, actually, everyday life captured in what are basically pigments, on stone. I think these served as, possibly, the first photo albums. Imagine that!

Tours in this area generally will take you, in a way, through the key painting spots. Trained local guides almost make the ancient artwork come to life. They talk you through each picture. Tours will make sure you understand what each piece is trying to show; stories told right onto rock walls. The guides give you tons of info too. These points cover pretty much all areas like historical backgrounds and symbol significance. It’s quite amazing. To experience all this, you could be walking in this historical theater anywhere from three to six hours; almost like getting lost in an outside classroom from what I’ve heard.

3. Tarangire National Park and Surrounding Maasai Villages

Tarangire National Park Maasai Villages

You know, it’s almost pretty cool to be visiting Tarangire National Park not just for the big animals—lions, elephants, giraffes; but just picture taking a tour which actually adds a visit to a nearby Maasai village. So, it’s actually perfect for learning about, in a way, the traditions of the Maasai tribe; an iconic part of Tanzania. These are unique, too. They’re still so well intact around here, and can’t really be missed.

Many organized tours give a chance to, kind of, see how they herd livestock; while there are other lessons on local craftsmanship, too. Or how they do business. That aside, this is all more than watching. You can talk with people, play with people, and get involved. See their housing style, called a “Boma;” these are built in circles, that’s an old Maasai cultural move. A lot of people who leave very positive tour reviews mention that they spend so much time just hearing Maasai stories and history. At the end of the day, it almost always opens the idea of a culture they have been missing.

Babati Area Iraqw Tribe Cultural Experiences

Okay, a lot of folks don’t realize that near Babati you’re gonna find a good, honest view into Iraqw tribal culture. The Iraqw don’t get a ton of publicity; even very very few actually seek them out. Usually people are just driving on by. And yet, they offer just so many different lessons about farming styles and, you guessed it, old stories too.

Most tours feature things, too. For example, people can hike with locals or even have an Iraqw explain local medicinal plants. Also? Check out the farms and coffee plantations.
