It’s not just some pretty place; it’s packed with stories from way, way back. And what’s the best way to soak all that in? By going on a tour, of course! I’ve rounded up five of the tours I think, in some respects, showcase Montepulciano’s historical charm best. Are you ready? Let’s get going then.
1. The Classic Montepulciano Walking Tour
A walking tour, typically, is where it all begins, wouldn’t you agree? You get to, kind of, stretch your legs and really see the town up close. This specific tour usually, anyway, starts right at the Porta al Prato, which is that main entrance to Montepulciano. The guides, they are usually very engaging, walk you through the main streets and alleys, all while filling your head with loads of historical facts and really fascinating tales. You will often learn about the architecture, too it’s almost, with guides pointing out, like, the Palazzo Comunale (that’s the town hall), and the Cathedral, which really show off Montepulciano’s, well, pretty remarkable past. Oh, and there are, like, usually some wine tasting opportunities thrown in. Bonus!
A big highlight? It’s, more or less, when you get to climb to the top of the Palazzo Comunale. Now, the views from up there, that is something else, honestly. You can really see all of Tuscany laid out before you! The price for this tour tends to be roughly around €25–€35, arguably, for a 2-3 hour experience. Does that sound good to you? I sure think it does!

Did you know, actually, that Montepulciano is just a bit, like, a cake? In a way, I am saying that there’s a whole other town underneath the one you see! And there is an Underground City tour. You’ll get a chance to check it out. How exciting! A little differently to your run-of-the-mill tours, that is usually in basements of the old, old buildings. These tunnels, very, very, date back centuries, too it’s almost, and they have lots of cool stories linked to them. Some stories say, at the end of the day, these passages were, arguably, used for, just a bit, secretive escapes and, you know, storage way back when. Very exciting, huh?
These tours, naturally, often include entry to the Cantina Ercolani, that features, well, the biggest underground tunnel system in the town. That whole experience is pretty immersive and gives you just a little glimpse into Montepulciano’s past life. Be ready, the tour usually is an hour and a half long, roughly costing around €15–€20, okay?

Wine and Montepulciano, is that, something of a match made in heaven, right? Several tour operators provide a Wine and History tour, and typically, usually, they involve the culture of both. In fact, a little differently, these tours walk you through a history lesson of Montepulciano, with, kind of, a major focus on the vino nobile that, you know, is the super, really iconic red wine that, just a little, originates from that town. Plus, of course, this offers great sipping opportunities!
These tours also very, very include visits to, kind of, some of the historical cellars where the wine production happens. You learn about, actually, the process of wine making as well as what, arguably, role wine plays in the town. That experience can last from, arguably, 3 to 4 hours, costing somewhere around €40-€60. It’s an investment, yes, yet I find it very worthwhile, honestly!

Want an experience that feels really special? Well, arguably, go for a Private Tour with a Local Guide! Very often this offers you the most flexible experience, and really, that is the experience which is more attuned to whatever interests that you do, literally, have, okay? These types of tour guides will, in some respects, create your own unique tour plan by using your preferences, you know, ensuring that what you’re really into — maybe that means the Renaissance art, possibly, it means local folklore, just whatever it means — they will focus on it, you know?
These, obviously, tend to be on, arguably, a pricier side — expecting somewhere to spend like around €100–€200 for a half-day of private exploring — yet it’s something like money really well spent to obtain a closer look! These experiences can run roughly between 3 and 5 hours, arguably, depending on, honestly, your agreement, naturally. Do you like the sound of that?
