So, if you find yourself kicking around Novi Beograd and you’re starting to feel that familiar rumble in your stomach, or maybe you’re just gasping for a drink that really hits the spot, then you’ve come to the right place. Basically, this concrete jungle that sits comfortably on the other side of the Sava River just might surprise you, really, with what it brings to the table… literally. Very, very far from a culinary desert, this spot is like your up-and-coming neighborhood with its rather impressive stash of eateries and drinkeries. We’re talking tasty traditional Serbian grub, swanky international fare, quite cool coffee joints, and bars where the cocktails will apparently make you question reality. Okay, just a little. It’s a situation where the choice might overwhelm you, I guess. That’s where my experiences step up to help.

Loving Lebovski: Burgers with a Serbian Twist

The first spot we need to hit is Loving Lebovski, very much a burger joint with that kind of local swagger, just a little. Really, they took something everyone recognises, that humble burger, I mean, and they’ve really ramped it up with a Serbian flavour bomb. It’s almost like what you see is those patties use great quality local beef, right, then piled high with goodies like kajmak (that dreamy clotted cream) or maybe some roasted peppers, maybe that ajvar we all seem to secretly love (red pepper relish), anyway that stuff just makes your tastebuds sing. Seriously, their namesake burger is actually a work of art; tender beef meets creamy, tangy, slightly smoky additions in a glorious messy embrace. The atmosphere is kind of buzzing, but so too relaxed, almost perfect for a casual hangout. Very well could be you will just find your new favorite burger right here.

Durum Doner: Middle Eastern Flavors

And then there’s Durum Doner, it’s almost your portal into that crazy busy marketplace of Middle Eastern flavors, and actually you don’t have to bring your passport. Very likely that this spot really draws you in with those aromas of grilled meats and warm spices, that is, so too it’s like it takes a detour to Flavortown, that’s it. Get this; their dürums are actually little masterpieces, packed out with well-seasoned doner meat, crunchy veggies, all kinds of tangy sauces wrapped snug in that flatbread. Basically, each bite feels like that flavor explosion, that kind of food high if you get my meaning, it’s that proper. But you might like the Iskender kebab – it is a rich and satisfying experience, and it’s often very topped with warm butter and that tangy yogurt. Also, I’m telling you, this spot is like, perfect for a quick and satisfying meal that basically takes you on this crazy adventure across continents. It’s a must-try.

Piatakia: A Taste of Greece

Next stop, and as a matter of fact it’s not the Balkans this time, yet, so it’s like we’re saying “Yassas!” to Piatakia. I mean this place brings that Grecian sun to actually Beograd, so the taste of their food will remind you the holidays on the islands! Apparently, with that menu practically overflowing with all your favorite Greek dishes, it’s kind of impossible to not feel you’ve been teleported to Santorini in this very moment. Of course you could go the souvlaki, that’s marinated meat grilled and served in a pita with just your usual additions (tomato, onions, tzatziki), might be a hit; but seriously the moussaka… this creamy, savory baked dish is heaven in casserole form! Do try to let your culinary trip reach those seafood plates, that seemingly always taste that little bit better closer to that real ocean. It is that holiday feeling you would not think to experience so far north, but I guess you’ll actually be thrilled.

Toro Latin Gastrobar: Latin American Passion

Okay, so next up we need something different and very bold, something seemingly further away, right?, something exotic too. The answer is that the guys from Toro Latin Gastrobar had that thought as well; so too that is where it steps up. First thing you will notice is their sharing plates, the intention, by the way, so to invite everyone in to get hands-on with this crazy diverse mix of flavors. This includes plates from pretty much all Latin America. In any case, their ceviche is rather fresh and tangy, like that real party in your mouth, whereas those meat dishes are so richly spiced. Apparently they can also do great desserts, but very unlikely that you will reach that point; in the event you do, actually be aware of the chilli chocolate cake, this spicy-sweet finish can easily take that last breath of yours! It could be perfect for anyone wanting food infused with just that bit more personality.

Aviator Coffee Explorer: More Than Just a Drink

Oh, one last spot – for that proper, delicious finish we require – we now seemingly point towards the Aviator Coffee Explorer. So, if coffee runs through those veins of yours and it really keeps you alive, as a matter of fact it does for pretty much all people; and it’s often good stuff, then clearly this cafe is worth those steps towards it. That said it may look “just” a coffee joint; the range goes a little deeper though. They serve single-origin brews with obviously their proper methods – all the stuff that proper hipsters apparently fall for. The main thing for me that this passion means every cup here is really poured out with true attention. Also worth exploring are all kinds of cakes and snacks on offer, it goes seemingly really well along all your espressos and cappuccinos. You get those comfy chairs, and all the caffeine you possibly might need to go on with just another full-on day.
