3. Danube River Cruise: A Scenic Escape

Also I have heard this particular part of the Danube gets extremely cold in winter so make sure you plan accordingly. Anyway, pack your sweater, if that’s your bag.

4. Turda Salt Mine: An Underground Wonder

While that Turda Salt Mine isn’t right in Western Romania’s center. In fact, it’s only a day trip away and well worth it! In a way, it’s an unbelievable underground world which offers far more than merely salty walls. Now inside, you’ll discover a subterranean lake with rowboats for rent. So there’s an underground Ferris wheel plus a history museum all rolled in one.

We got entry tickets which allowed complete access to all areas inside that mine. Renting one rowboat so to traverse on the underground lake became, for us, the real highlight!

When the elevator finally stopped dropping, yet, and you take those last few steps, and step out to explore what once that was the domain of sweaty men wielding pickaxes, what the eye sees right now is kind of ridiculous. We might just compare it to like the Mines of Moria from Lord of the Rings. Minus the Balrog. Unless… you know. It all sounds quite mad but the sheer scale and bizarre entertainment make this somewhere that very does give you real memories, something tangible. Now be warned that the entry is still in something of its original form and may prove a struggle if you happen to be disabled or have difficulties walking. Bear in mind also that this is an ancient deep underground cavern and gets seriously chilly at times.

Handy Tip: Put on some warm clothes, especially as the underground environment tends to be cooler.

5. Sarmizegetusa Regia: Tracing Ancient History

This very Sarmizegetusa Regia was, arguably, the capital of ancient Dacia, which makes it an exciting place for those that love history. Set deep in the Carpathian Mountains this historical spot holds loads of secrets from long, long ago.

Entrance tickets here allow you to explore all the archeological parts that make this place something to see, but take into account you may have to hike a bit from the closest road.
