1. Hiking Roys Peak: Iconic Views
Alright, let’s talk about Roys Peak. Arguably, it’s the hike, you know? This is, like your chance to snag that super famous Wanaka shot from the top, the one that’s been all over the place. It’s seemingly a bit of a climb – that it’s a steady uphill that just keeps going and going – however that view? Man, it’s almost hard to put it into words. Imagine looking out at Lake Wanaka glistening way, way below, with all those mountaintops sticking up all around. I mean, the feeling you get is really something else. Plan maybe about five to six hours for the whole trip, too it’s really best to start early, like really early, before the sun gets too hot and the crowds pile up. Pack tons of water, maybe throw in some snacks, wear decent walking shoes… and there you have it. Just prepare yourself for some major ‘gram bragging rights.
I want to share with you an old personal anecdote that illustrates the magic of Roys Peak. It’s almost funny now, but when I first hiked Roys Peak, I wasn’t exactly prepared, you know? I mean, I thought “oh, it’s just a walk,” how wrong could I have been. But the view at the summit, it completely changed everything, in a way. You stand there and the immense beauty around you, like it dwarfs all those little worries and doubts, is that something! Like suddenly, all that mattered was that precise moment, and feeling utterly connected to everything around me. That just how powerful these landscapes can be!

2. Mou Waho Island: A Lake on an Island in a Lake
So, what’s a bit unusual? What about Mou Waho Island, right smack dab in the middle of Lake Wanaka? Yeah! Very! Here’s a really cool fact: this island boasts its very own little lake. Called Arethusa Pool! And yep, there’s even a wee island right in that lake, really. You can typically get there via a boat trip – I’d go for the one including a guide, by the way, that’s seemingly how you soak up all the amazing history and stories of the island, or what?! You might want to tackle a hike to the top for views that almost seem like they go on forever, keep your peepers peeled for the native birds hopping all over. Honestly, I feel the island is actually fantastic for folks hoping to ditch the hustle and recharge in nature. I’m pretty sure you will agree!
One fine summer a few years back, I decided I needed some solo time, kind of a “me, myself, and I” recharge day. That’s almost when Mou Waho Island caught my eye, I hopped on the little ferry and headed out. When I reached to the summit it’s seemingly nothing short of spectacular. Everything appears more surreal, it dawns that the everyday chaos that used to weigh so heavy, in a way, it just melted away with every breath! That sense of calm is something, I carry with me to this day!

I once took my mom paragliding for her sixtieth birthday, because I felt it was a good age challenge! You may or not expect her eyes to be as wild, as when she got onto it. Now I admit, I never went, as a nervous flier and having a real view, it was not good on my brain, still, just watch mum so carefree in all her fear! I just found that super awesome!
